Awarapan (2007) Movie Review - Gangster in love, Emraan v.2.0

Where was this side of Emraan hiding, after stupid role and sloppy acting in Good Boy Bad Boy, Emraan Hashmi, finally shows his powerful acting in Awarapan. Even his foes won’t be able to resist from loving him in this movie. Believe me, he has gave up everything he has been doing since his debut - No smooches, No naughty looks, No double meaning lines, No awkward dancing in Hawaiian shirts, he leaves all those behind and plays a stone cold assassin, who has lost his love and has no more lust for life.
Mark my words, With Awarapan, Emraan has put his name forth for critic’s best actor award next year with an inevitable crowd of fans showering over him.

After Anurag Basu’s Gangster, once again a thriller drama comes from the Bhatt Camp, but this time with director Mohit Suri. Mohit and Emraan had been together since Zeher days. The duo has given many Hollywood rip-off hits, and Awarapan just takes this combo to new heights. Technically speaking, even Awarapan is copy of A BITTERSWEET LIFE [2005; Korean title: DALKOMHAN INSAENG; starring Lee Byung-Hun, Kim Young-Cheol, Shin Mina], but its execution is par above all the movies Suri has ever directed.
Awarapan is extremely serious and tries to show the dilemma of a sensitive heartbroken lover turned assassin. A journey of a heartbroken lover Shivam [Emraan] who, in order to escape from the haunting memories of his tragic past, dedicates himself to serve his gangster boss Malik [Ashutosh Rana], who runs a chain of hotels in Hong Kong. He blindly follows his master’s orders like a slave, one of such order was to keep an eye upon one of Malik’s mistress - Reema [Mrinalini Sharma]. Reema is a young Pakistani girl who is a victim of human trafficking. Malik had bought her from flesh market in Bangkok.
Shivam had been ordered to kill Reema, if he finds Reema cheating upon Malik, but fate of the poor guy, he himself falls for her and that is how his old wounds of lost love rebounds. Now he is torn between his love and his docility. When he finally finds that his life has got overcomplicated beyond the bounds, ultimately he realizes that an innocent looking Reema is actually not as innocent as it seems.
She is already in love with someone else named - Rehan and was planning to leave Malik and run away with the same guy. What will Shivam do now ?
Follow Malik’s order ?
Support Reema and betray his master and bury love within his heart again.
If you are fan of Guns ‘n Roses theme (not the band) then you won’t be disappointed by the movie. The movie has excessively used bullets and violence to portray the love story of this wanderer. Apart from gripping and thrilling storyline, it is Emraan’s performance which will make you spellbound. As mentioned in preview, the movie is technically par above regular Bhatt movies that Bhatt’s invested around 18 Cr. Rupees. With the advanced cinematography, bollywood seems to be improving day by day to match its Hollywood counterpart.
Music of Awarapan is one of the plus points, Pritam along with bunch of new singers gives fresh and different kind of songs. The music and choreography of the song Ab Aa O Naa is simply outstanding.
Performance wise, it is completely Emraan’s movie. South Indian actress, Shriya has not more than cameo role, which she has done with an ease. Mrinalini Sharma has given her best and it appears on the screen. She looks very promising. Another striking performance is from Aushutosh Rana, he is absolutely splendid.
If you loved Gangster, then you will love this Gangster.

This movie was amazing, a must see for all those who are not big fans of Emran Hashmi! :-) Impressive job!
IMO, Mr Mahesh Bhat has subtly tried to stray Muslim women to live a life that really is illogical and beyond the realms of imagination of a very large group of Muslim women.
Yes Of course there is a minority of Muslim females who might not follow Islamic dress code and wear a non-moderate attire, like a short skirt BUT that does NOT represent the majority of Muslim women, while Mr. Mahesh is posing as if its pretty normal to pray salaat with all your heart and soul, and then go out with a guy (bilal) to sing songs wearing a skirt, or a Muslim woman’s inability to enter into a mosque to get a “taweez” lol. And on her relation with a kidnapper, I think, In most circumstances, a pious Muslim woman who is keen in praying Salaat will rather commit suicide then becoming sex slave of an ugly bastard (Ashutosh Rana).
Same goes with the other scene when a pious muslim woman Aliya, she is offering salaat on a date (lol) and right from “Jaye namaaz” she jumps into the hands of her boyfriend, and starts hugging and rubbing… I don’t think this represent any Muslim woman, not on a minute level of exceptional cases.
Mr Mahesh, there is NOTHING in your movie that represent Islam or its true message. You have depicted Islam as limited to “Taweez and Dargah”, while the actual message of Islam is much, much broader, and specially the dignity it provides to muslim females, but you have simply tarnished this image. The last scene of the movie is where Mr. Bhat’s intention actually show their true colors when a supposedly kidnapped and freed female is addressing other Muslim females to fight for freedom. Now what does it all have to do with Islam or being a Pakistani woman? Isn’t it a right of every female? Why pose that only Pakistani or Muslim females have a problem and they are living the life of a slave?
Mr. Bhat, how about you make a movie about Hindu tradition that disallows a widow to be re-married?
This movie is nothing else than the previously crappy Bollywood hogwash about Muslims females. The fact is, its mostly hindu females who run away with Muslim guys, not only India but all around the world but Bollywood ignores the reality and represents a very, very minute portion of Indian society where a Muslim female leaves out of Islam with a non Muslim guy.
Same goes with the movie Fanaa, where a Muslim pair is shown to have a baby out of wedlock (which some time happens, no doubt) but that does not represent the majority of Muslim world’s environment. I wonder, in the name of art, if the same director makes a movie where a hindu Brahman is shown to slaughter a cow and enjoy some Bar-Be-Que?
kya mast rol kiya hai sala!!
coollllll movie
suPeR hiT.
hi mr.khan, i feel you are an idiot to think like that,i wonder you have watched the movie, well majority of the actors in the movie are muslims you would now probably declare them as not true muslims? why are blaming bhatt’s for that? i think he is the only man in bollywood who is throwing light on your religion not in a wrong manner that is why he talks about freedom of a women ,you say a muslim women would commit suicide than being a sex slave are you now not taking away the freedom from her to live a second life?how could you only remember the dress code of muslim women after watching the movie?, its a sheer pity of you not the directors vision of cinema, the background in the movie is hong kong,do you want women’s whatever hindu or muslim to cover themselves from head to toe in such cities to make people look at them that how different are they in the name of religion?let me give you a peice of advice never take your religous sentiments with you to watch a movie i feel people like you have not grown up for that, cinema is not reality reality of slaughter of hindus and cows(as you compare with)is worse you know that aren’t you? let me convey you the right message given by the flick it portrays the character of shivam pandit(a hindu) and a non beliver who falls in love with aliya a believer, the girls death haunts him always ,he finally finds redemption by giving life to a pakistani girl and finds peace in his lovers arms in ‘jannat’,the director had no intention of hurting a muslims feeling as in the end he shows a monastry where light daswns on shivam and he finds his way out of the world of crime, buddhism speaks that a persons karma stands above all in the world, that is why he kills the protagnist in the end,put your ardent ego of religion aside and then watch the movie again, may be you will feel better or go and watch any of govinda’s flicks, nice for your health.
