After absurd 36 China Town and Naqaab, Abbas-Mastan the director duo in white finally comes with something interesting with Race. But, wait a minute!
As their earlier movies Race too is a copy of Hollywood movie - Goodbye Lover (1999). So if you have already seen that movie, then this movie might be boredom for you. Well, for others who love mystery thriller genre, its pretty good nibble for your brain and mind. Despite few loose ends, Race is a movie with both style and substance.

Aankh Dhoka Hai, Kya Bharosa Hai… long time ago Kishore Kumar sang this song for Rajesh Khanna in Aap Ki Kasam. The movie Race reminded me of the same song. Everything you see is a lie, deceit; you can’t believe everything that you see in this world. With full of twists and turns, the story of Race marathons in all directions until a murder is committed. Love, betrayal, extra maritial affair, double cross and meticulous murder - you can see everything. Apart from Goodbye Lover, the movie also has a strong resemblance with Ved Prakash Sharma’s double crossing novels.

The movie begins with introduction of four characters in the movie with Anil Kapoor’s voice over in the narration. Ranvir Singh (Saif Ali Khan) and Rajeev Singh (Akshaye Khanna) are brothers with a great deal of money on hand. Saif Ali Khan is very shrewd man and always thinks about winning, while his younger step brother is a chronic alcoholic who always think of defeating his elder brother. Ranvir and Rajeev are biggest bookies in the horse racing circuit. Ranvir is unaware of the fact that his personal secretary Sophia (Katrina Kaif) is head-over-heals in love with him but he falls for Sonia (Bipasha Basu), an Indian Model.

Sonia loves Ranvir, but through a twist of fate gets married to Rajiv. When she discovers that Rajiv is a chronic alcoholic, her world is shattered. Ranvir too is disturbed as he has sacrificed his love for his younger brother because Rajiv had promised him that if he gets married to Sonia, he will leave alcohol forever.

After all love and sacrifice, now begins betrayal and extra-maritial affair between past time lovers Sonia and Ranvir. When Rajeev gets to know about this betrayal, all hell breaks out loose. A murder is committed!

Who has been killed, what was the motive?

Its now, up to the sharp-tongued investigative officer R.D. [Anil Kapoor] along with his dumb bimbo assistant Mini [Sameera Reddy] to solve this twisted case.

It may seem Ranvir sacrificed his love Sonia, but he was actually plotting Sonia in Rajeev’s world to claim heavy insurance.

Making of Race (2008)

Race is one of the finest movie made by Mastan duo since Khiladi & Baazigaar in terms of both script and its execution. Saif once again revives his Ek Haseena Thi’s charm and proves he is much more than second lead goody goody Yash Raj or Karan Gay material. Askhaye is more than competent in playing underdog role. As for the ladies, Bipasha steal the show. Katrina seriously needs to work on her dialogue delivery and her Barbie doll look. In every movie you see same smiley expression and same booty shaking dance. And what in the God’s name Sameera is doing in the movie ? Her dumb role and much dumber act at times try to disturb the flow of the movie. On the other hand Johnny Lever’s guest comic act was much more appropriate and relief than her dumb acts. Anil was good at times and stupid at places, bit inconsistent.

Music wise Pritam’s numbers were very contemporary and go pretty well with the movie’s subject. Choreography just enhances the impact of the music. Atif’s rendition of Pehli Nazar Mein was mind blowing. The biggest asset of the movie apart from its script and actors is its mind blowing cinematography. Ace cinematographer Ravi Yadav has captured Durban, Dubai and India with very fine lens. His bird-eye view of fews scenes is much better than most Hollywood movies. Action direction by Allan Amin is remarkable and complements the story.

Overall, Race is combination of adrenaline rush action, backed by strong mystery thriller drama and supported by superb acting and cinematography.
