Lost Worlds, Vanished Lives is a four-part BBC documentary series concerning the discovery of fossils. It is written and presented by David Attenborough, produced by Mike Salisbury, and was originally broadcast in April 1989. Break open a stone and you may discover a new species, one that existed thousands of years ago. From insects to dinosaurs, David Attenborough shares his enthusiasm for fossils and fulfils one of his most enduring ambitions: a global fossil hunt.

We know him as a ubiquitous presence in some of the world’s finest nature documentaries, but there’s another side of David Attenborough revealed in Lost Worlds Vanished Lives: his lifelong passion for fossils. He tells us
in Episode 1 how he collected fossils as a child, and it’s evident from his visits to fossil sites and talks with palaeontologists in this series that his enthusiasm hasn’t faded with age.
