Rangeela a 1995 bollywood movie directed by Ram Gopal Varma is considered a landmark in Indian commercial cinema. It features breakthrough performances by Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, and Jackie Shroff, A. R. Rahman’s superlative music score and streetwise direction, despite a predictable and weak plot. The plot of the film was based on an old Telugu movie SeethaMalakshmi, released in 1978..
Cast: Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, Jackie Shroff
This love triangle narrates the stories of three individuals: Mili Joshi (Urmilla Matondkar) hails from a middle-class family with a job as a dancer in Bollywood movies but dreams of making it big as an actress.Munna(Aamir Khan) is a small time black marketeer and Mili’s neighbourhood friend. One day while she is singing and dancing on the beach, she is approached by a rich and famous movie actor, Raj Kamal(Jackie Shroff) who has become introverted after a personal tragedy. When Raj Kamal spots Mili on a beach he asks her to take a screen test for the female lead in his next movie.Mili passes the test and is signed for the role.In the process, Raj Kamal and Mili get really close, and Raj Kamal who had already fell in love with Mili plans to ask her to marry him. This leaves Munna sad and is left in the cold, away from the colorful and glamorous world of movies and actors, and how can he possibly compete with an established movie star as Kamal. Will Mili marry Raj and live a life full of wealth and fame forever forms the climax of this movie..
Overall Rangeela showed off the talents of principal actors Aamir Khan and Urmila Matondkar. Aamir doffed his “sweet college kid” persona and did a well-researched street urchin; Urmila showed that she could act and dance. Her character was direct, frank, open, and sexy — a modern girl, not the shy, sweet homebody favored by traditionalists and depicted in so many Bollywood films.
