Bawarchi is a light-hearted film directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee starring Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Badhuri with Asrani, A.K. Hangal and Durga Khote in supporting roles.In Mukherjee’s classic style, the film contains no violence or obscenities, and focuses on spreading family values and morals through clean comedy.It is a remake of classic Bangla movie “Golpo Holeo Sotti” directed by Tapan Sinha.

The story is centered around the squabbling Sharma family which has a dubious reputation the inability to retain a cook for more than a few months due to their ill treatment of their servants. The family’s disrepute spreads to such an extent that no person wants to be employed as a cook in their home, ironically named Shanti Nivas (peaceful place).

Then one day a young man named Raghu (Rajesh Khanna) offers to work as a cook, and he is hired. Raghu quickly understands the family members’ preferences and works to restore peace to Shanti Nivas, and soon the squabbles and arguments come to an end.And then, one day, the Sharmas find the family jewels and Raghu missing.
