Karma - Crime Passion Reincarnation (2009) *MQ*

From director M R Shahjahan and writers Vivek Singhania and Amit Mehra, Karma: Crime, Passion, Reincarnation is a compact little thriller. The movie begins with a young couple arriving in an Indian hill station town.Anna (Alma Saraci) and Vikram (Carlucci Weyant) are the made-for-each-pair, Vik looking like he was dragged to the place and Anna requesting him not to sulk at any point.Vik has a beef with his father because daddy wasn’t around during Vik’s formative years.

Cast: Arlucci Weyant, Alma Saraci, Vijayendra Ghatge

On reaching “dad’s home”, Anna blends right in, having read up on Indian customs.Dad Ranvir (Vijayendra S Ghatge) welcomes them and is happy to have a daughter-in-law who cares about their tradition and culture despite being of foreign origin.Expressing regret at not having been present at his only son’s wedding, Ranvir throws a party for his close friends to meet son and son’s wife.Daughter-in-law, who’s made herself right at home at the ancestral home, faints at the bash. She wakes up and the couple are all geared up for a sex session but something causes her to react in a very strange way.

Anna has been getting flashes ever since she got into the old town, and these visions get more frequent and powerful over the next few days. She hears a voice calling her name and sees a young woman Linda (Claudia Ciesla) around. No one else sees Linda, and Vik suggests they consult with a psychiatrist.Ranvir wants Vikram to take over his tea estate and explains why Vik’s dad and mum had to separate.Even stranger things happen - a temple priestess delivers warnings to Anna, who confronts a bar owner who has photography as his hobby. The visions get even more powerful and make everything clear to Anna. With time and some googling (bless the internet), even Vik is convinced and together they reach the end of the murder mystery of Linda, who disappeared from a rave party in Ooty 30 years ago.

Shahjahan knows exactly what he’s doing with the story, which has been deftly crafted by Vivek Singhania and Amit Mehra. The dialogue is crisp and fresh and wonderfully devoid of cliches.Alexandra Wedenig is spot on with the editing, and everything about this film seems right.
