Balidaan (1985)

Police Inspector Vijay lives a wealthy lifestyle in Bombay, India, along with his Bua, while his widower dad lives in the countryside in a farmhouse. Vijay meets and falls in love with Uma, who subsequently moves in as a tenant in his Bua’s house along with her dad, Jagmohan and her mom. When Jagmohan finds out that Uma also loves Vijay he forbids her to see him, but subsequently relents when she poisons herself.

Victoria No. 203 (1972)

Victoria No. 203 is a 1972 Hindi film produced and directed by Brij.The film stars Navin Nischol, Saira Banu, Ranjeet, Anwar Hussain, Helen and in an inspired bit of casting -Ashok Kumar and Pran- who play key supporting roles in the film and who earned the only Filmfare nominations for the film.The music by Kalyanji Anandji and the roles of Ashok Kumar and Pran made this a “superhit” at the box office.

Tawaif is a Bollywood movie released in 1985. It was produced by B.R. Chopra and directed by Aleem Mansoor.It mainly is a film about a tawaif or a courtesan.This movie is among Bollywood’s underrated films which won Filmfare awards in 1986 for Best Dialogue Writer Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza and Best Story Writer Aleem Masroor.Rishi Kapoor delivers a good performance, Poonam is alright, kader Khan is good in a brief role, but Rati stole the show.I rate this film highly as it has a little comedy, Family drama, emotions and romance.

Rudaali (1993)

Rudaali is a 1993 Hindi film directed by the Feminist Indian director Kalpana Lajmi, based on the short story written by famous Bengali litterateur Mahasweta Devi.The title is a reference to a custom in certain areas of Rajasthan where women of a lower caste are hired as professional mourners upon the death of upper-caste males.These women are referred to as a ‘rudaali’ (roo-dah-lee), literally translated as ‘female weeper’ or “Weeping Woman”.Their job is to publicly express grief of family members who are not permitted to display emotion due to social status.
