Road, Movie (2010) *MQ*

null
Road, Movie has made it to several international film festivals, the director Dev Benegal is a veteran, and Abhay Deol movies are always a good watch. No reason to not watch the film. And I did, even before the other interesting release this weekend (Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge). But sadly, Road, Movie was a colossal disappointment.

Hide & Seek (2010) *LQ*

null
After an attempt to revisit Grudge in desi cinema, here’s one more Hollywood style slasher film that makes its debut on the native screen. Reminiscent of the I Know What You Did Last Summer series, Hide and Seek follows a similar format of chasing a bunch of friends through time, in order to settle a few forgotten scores from the sordid past.

Cast: Purab Kohli, Arjan Bajwa, Sameer Kochhar

Right Yaa Wrong (2010) *MQ*

While as a film critic you try and abandon any preconceived bias before you watch a film, it is unavoidable that when you walk into a theatre to watch a film called Right Yaa Wrong (Missing an extra ‘a’ there, am I?), you feel pretty much like the proverbial lamb to the slaughter. Face it: under normal movie-going circumstances; I wouldn’t be caught dead in a theatre screening this (or most other films that I review, for that matter).’

Rokkk (2010) *MQ*

null
We’ve all seen it before in one film or another.A haunted house, blood dripping down from ceiling, windows pushed open by strong gusts of wind, lights going off at most unexpected moments, the swing in the garden moving on its own, possessed women in possession of sharp objects (read knives and stilettos) and scary looking tantrics with their gobbledegook about evil spirits and exorcism. So what does director Rajesh Ranshinge’s horror film Rokkk offer that’s new.Pretty little.

Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge (2010) *MQ*

null
Neat. Subtle. And softly funny. Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge is quite unlike the hysterical laugh acts that have been trying terribly hard to make you laugh in recent Bollywood. More of a chuckle-and-a-smirk drama, this one doesn’t even try to convince you that life is all ha-ha-he-he. Instead, it creates situations and characters that fill you with warmth and make you smile with the familiar quirkiness of recognisable situations.

Karthik Calling Karthik (2010) *LQ*

null
Mouse sweet mouse. He stumbles, bumbles, mumbles for as many as four years at a swankyish office. A cross between Rocket Singh and Woody Allen, he writes up a thousand-plus emails but doesn’t send them to the gorgeous woman in that see-through cabin who seems to be doing damn-all.Evidently, this guy’s not headed for any hall of fame or ill-fame. He’s just a crashing bore.

Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Deepika Padukone

Teen Patti (2010) *MQ*

null
It’s a touch galling to see a movie dealing with an ingenious mathematical theory of probable outcomes having so little brain of its own self. For starters, let’s dump aside the obvious comparison between Teen Patti and the Hollywood film ‘21’ from which the co-writers Leena Yadav and Shiv Subramaniam have borrowed audaciously, liberally and without as much as the slightest prick of conscience (what’s that!).

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Sir Ben Kingsley, R Madhavan
