Ishq (”Romance”) is all over the place - even for a masala film. It is part slapstick comedy, part socio-political diatribe, part violent melodrama. The story is time-honored - a rich boy and a rich girl fall in love with a poor boy and a poor girl (respectively); the rich family disapproves, and plots and schemes to separate them. The first half of the film is full of slapstick silliness as the romances develop.

Director Shashant Shah’s movie Dasvidaniya is a slow but heart-wrenching tale of a 37-year-old man who has few months left to live and sets out to live it to the fullest before he says his final goodbye. The movie, though not based on a novel premise, works because of actor Vinay Pathak ’s emphatic performance as a dying man with an ironic name Amar, and because of the finely etched-out characters in the story.

It has all the opulence and grandeur of a certified Subhash Ghai film. But what ‘Yuvvraaj’ doesn’t have is a tight script at its backbone. The movie limps at many points in its long running time of a little less than three hours.‘Yuvvraaj’ is a film about fraternal bonding and how people who have been blinded by the lure of lucre undergo a change of heart and mind when they have none but each other to fall back on in the times of crisis. With each frame bearing an undeniable Ghai stamp, ‘Yuvvraaj’ turns out, for the most part, an audio-visual spectacle with a missing soul.

This is one of the minor examples of Bollywood’s ability to cross genres. For better ones, turn to “Humraaz” or, well, probably anything you can find on the market. Why is “Yeh Kaisi Mohabbat” this bad? It starts and ends with Johnny Lever.

Sorry to disappoint all the young girls, but unfortunately Ranbir doesn’t drop the towel in this one but to make it up to you, he looks super hot throughout the film, appearing shirtless in a few scenes. Bachna Ae Haseeno may have flaws as a film, yet it succeeds in entertaining and does so many things right, that you are willing to overlook the mistakes. The best part about the film is that in spite of being slightly over two hours twenty minutes, the film’s pace is very crisp and you in fact may walk out of the theatre planning to see the film again.

Abbas-Mustan, the director duo who have given blood curdling suspense thrillers like Baazigar and Khiladi strays off their usual formula in Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. This time romance and tragedy seem to have taken precedence over thrills and suspense. And there is also enough of Bharjatya-type family drama.
